The City of Houston, also playfully referred to as "H-Town," has become one of the most appealing destinations for retirees nationwide. For individuals who value diverse experiences and world-class healthcare, the city offers the perfect blend of adventure and practicality. Here are five reasons Houston should be at the top of your list when planning your retirement.

1. World-Class Healthcare Facilities

The older you get, the more crucial it becomes to access the best healthcare services that you can afford. Fortunately for seniors, Houston is home to some of the best hospitals in the country:

  • MD Anderson Cancer Center consistently ranks as the nation’s best cancer hospital. It offers advanced treatments and boasts high-performing ratings in various adult procedures. MD Anderson receives the most research grants from the National Cancer Institute, and deservedly so, based on the quality of their facilities. This hospital is also highly recommended for eye, ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist care and urology services.
  • TIRR Memorial Hermann is one of the top two hospitals nationwide in terms of rehabilitation services. For the past three decades, it has provided exceptional care for those recovering from traumatic brain injuries and other conditions. TIRR Memorial Hermann is one of a select few hospitals in the United States that is designed by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) as a Traumatic Brain Injury Model System.
  • Houston Methodist Hospital is number one in Texas for patient care and quality. It is ranked among the top ten best hospitals for specialties such as diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, and pulmonology. The U.S. News & World Report evaluated this institution with high-performance ratings in all twenty standard medical procedures.

With these facilities nearby, retirees living in Houston can access specialized and life-saving care without requiring extensive travel.

2. Lower Cost of Living Than the National Average

For many retirees, the goal is to stretch their savings as much as possible. Living in Houston makes this easier, as it is more affordable than other major cities in Texas and beyond.

The Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) Cost of Living Index for Q3 2024 ranks Houston as having the third-lowest living costs among the country’s most populous metropolitan areas. Compared to other major Texas cities, the average price of rent, dining, and groceries in Houston is lower than in Dallas and Austin.

With housing costs in Houston 18.8% below the national average, retirees can purchase homes at an average price of $263,365. Given the current trend of housing expenses, settling in H-Town can be a wise financial decision.

Texas also stands out as one of the most tax-friendly states for seniors. Since the Lone Star State does not impose a state income tax, Social Security benefits, pensions, and other retirement income remain untaxed.

Additionally, the state offers several property tax exemptions and deferrals. Homeowners aged 65 or older can apply for a tax deferral that allows them to postpone paying property taxes on their homestead for as long as they live there. While interest accrues at a modest 5% annually, this policy provides flexibility and peace of mind. Combine this with the low average cost of living in Houston, and retirees can spend more of their money on leisure activities and travel without the financial stress they might face in other cities.

3. Senior Living Communities

Houston offers a wide range of senior living communities that cater to different needs and lifestyles. Whether you prefer independent living, assisted living, or memory care, you’ll find options prioritizing safety, comfort, and quality of life. With over 65 senior living communities in the area, retirees can choose a setting that best fits their lifestyle preferences.

4. Diverse Food Scene

Houston is a major food hub that will be truly enjoyed by senior food enthusiasts. The city’s culinary scene is unmatched, featuring flavors from all around the world. In 2024, six Houston restaurants earned a Michelin star, while 17 others received the Bib Gourmand designation that signifies high-quality food at great value. From Asian eateries in Bellaire to Mediterranean and Tex-Mex spots scattered across the city, there’s something for every palate.

5. Recreational Activities

For those who love the outdoors, Houston’s warm climate allows for year-round activities such as golfing, hiking, and strolling through beautiful parks. Museum District is a cultural treasure trove of art, science, and history exhibits. It is home to Hermann Park and the famous Houston Zoo. The Museum of Fine Arts and Houston Museum of Natural Science offer discounted or free admission for seniors. These locations are senior-friendly thanks to the built-in accessible ramps, mobility aid rentals, paved pathways, railings, and widened doorways.

Older adults also have many indoor activities to enjoy while shielding themselves from hot Houston weather. Scattered throughout H-Town are shopping malls, cafes, bingo centers, and bowling arenas, almost all of which are safe and accessible for seniors.

Considering everything that Houston has to offer, would you consider spending your retirement in the city?
