In addition to its gorgeous&nbsp;<a href="https://sfpl.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">main hub</a><a href="https://sfpl.org/">&nbsp;</a>on Larkin Street, the library has dozens of local, neighborhood branches that host book clubs as part of their outreach. This new twist on book clubs began in 2012 in San Francisco and has gone global (54 countries and counting). B-Sides is a book club hosted by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.booksmith.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Booksmith</a> in the Haight neighborhood that specializes in non-mainstream books by lesser-known authors. Held after hours in the evening, it features cocktails and menu items. Rather than book clubs, some independents, such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bookpassage.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Book Passage</a> in the Ferry Building, host ticketed author events and readings, which allow book lovers to mingle before or after the event and enjoy the Q&amp;A.

It’s just a 75-minute drive along the Coast Highway 1 (a quicker inland route will get you there 20 minutes earlier, but there’s no view – always a trade-off, it seems).Santa Cruz offers classic seaside fun and seasonal natural wonders, ideal for seniors. Opened in 1907, the amusement park still features its original Giant Dipper, an iconic wooden rollercoaster that noisily climbs steep tracks and plunges into deep dives, replete with happily screaming passengers. One of nature’s most joyful and colorful events happens each fall when Monarch butterflies migrate from their home in the western Rockies and Canada to overwinter in Santa Cruz. Thousands of these beautiful orange and black butterflies roost here from mid-October through January, where flowering eucalyptus trees provide food and shelter along their journey. Probably the best-known is&nbsp;<a href="https://sequoialiving.org/senior-center/aquatic-park/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Aquatic Park Senior Center</a> on Beach Street, tucked into the city’s Maritime Museum. This is a hub for chair and mat yoga, moderate and challenge exercise classes, tai chi and much more. Conveniently accessible by public transportation, it’s a highly rated hang-out space in a beautiful setting for seniors. Its sister center, the&nbsp;<a href="https://sequoialiving.org/senior-center/downtown/?utm_source=gmb&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_content=gmb-website" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Downtown San Francisco Senior Center</a> on O’Farrell Street, also has a full weekly calendar of fitness activities. In a friendly, supportive environment, it focuses on&nbsp;seniors, people with all disabilities, LGBTGIA+ and transgender or non-binary participants from around the city.

Located in the northwest corner of Golden Gate Park,&nbsp;<a href="https://sfrecpark.org/Facilities/Facility/Details/Golden-Gate-Park-Senior-Center-90" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Golden Gate Park Senior Center</a> attracts participants who are 55 and older. In addition to the standard exercise and movement classes, it also offers dance classes, which are particularly helpful for individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease.
