This morning, while tending to my friend in her final hours, a supervisor asked me, “Did you even check on her?” in a most unprofessional manner. It’s disappointing after losing someone, your life turned upside down for weeks caring for them, to be treated dismissively by a for-profit enterprise. I would be surprised if my friend’s passing was not both hastened and made much more unpleasant by the staff’s failure to provide her with a necessary medication for ~10d because they were “waiting for pharmacy to send it”. No attempt was made to inform family (present daily) that the medication was not given. The patient’s resulting low hormone levels are known to commonly cause reversible dementia; upsetting not least because these symptoms were induced by the neglect of a facility now threatening to throw them out. She died, incapacitated by dementia, certainly still with low hormone. Also, pork products are repeatedly served to known non-pork consuming residents.
