I was foolish and did the "buy down" to try and save the family money in the long-run. My father died after 3 months, my mother could no longer live in the independent setting. Even though they had said that there was a possibility of a refund depending on the circumstances, they refused to give us anything back at all. The $5000.00 we gave them was basically a big gift to them. They said they have "compassion for seniors." Where was that compassion to my mother when her husband died? Bad choice to spend some of their very little remaining funds to try and save money in the long run. It's a big gamble, learn from my mistake.
